Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)
- Obstructive Sleep Apnea, or (OSA), is a sleep-related breathing disorder that causes your body to stop breathing during sleep. OSA occurs when the tissue in the back of the throat collapses and blocks the airway, keeping air from getting into the lungs. Snoring and excessive daytime sleepiness are the primary symptoms found. It is the most common of all sleep disorders and effects over 20 million Americans.
Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS)
- Restless Legs Syndrome is when you have a strong urge to move your legs that is very hard to resist. It often comes with other uneasy feelings deep inside the legs. The sensation can be like burning, prickling, itching or tingling. It can even be more extreme and feel painful. These feelings, along with the urge to move, are made worse during bedtime. Lying or sitting still can be very hard. Temporary relief is found when you walk or move your legs.
Narcolepsy
- A disorder characterized by sudden and uncontrollable, though often brief, sleep attacks, sometimes accompanied by paralysis and/or hallucinations. The primary symptoms are excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS), cataplexy (sudden loss of muscle tone), hallucinations and sleep paralysis. Most often these symptoms will begin to appear in adolescence or young adulthood.
Insomnia
- The inability or difficulty initiating and/or maintaining sleep. Everyone has an occasional night of bad sleep. For most people insomnia lasts only a few days and goes away without treatment. But stress or depression can cause a higher level of insomnia that lasts for several weeks or months. This kind of insomnia may not go away on its own.
There are four basic kinds of insomnia: 1) Difficulty falling asleep 2) Difficulty staying asleep 3) Waking up too early 4) Poor quality sleep
1. More than 70 million people in the U.S. have a sleep disorder; and most are
completely unaware of it!
2. The average person will spend one third of their life sleeping, which equates to about
20-25 years over a 75 year life span.
3. Over 20 million Americans suffer from Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), an often life-
threatening condition, 95% of which go untreated!
4. According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), there are now officially
81 documented sleep disorders.
5. Sleep Apnea is as prevalent as adult diabetes and asthma.
6. OSA sufferers are 3-7 times more likely to be involved in automobile accidents!
7. More than 1 in 2 people with Type II diabetes have sleep apnea!
8. According to research at the University of Chicago, there is now a clear and inverse
relationship between OSA severity and glucose control in patients with Type II diabetes.
9. The research also confirmed that undiagnosed sleep apnea is very common among
patients with Type II diabetes, indicating OSA as a largely unrecognized risk factor for
these patients.
10. The lack of sleep can disrupt hormone levels, making you feel hungry even when your
body doesn't need food.
11. A national survey found that 69% of American adults fail to recognize sleep as a critical
factor in maintaining good health.
12. The U.S. Department of Transportation estimates that at least 200,000 traffic accidents
occur each year because of driver fatigue.
13. The Exxon Valdez oil spill off Alaska, the Challenger space shuttle disaster and the
Chernobyl nuclear accident have all been attributed to human errors in which sleep
deprivation played a vital role!
